Getting a place to live

Preparation

Make sure you're fully prepared by thinking carefully about where you want to live and who you want to live with. Check out our accommodation chart, which lists all the pros and cons of different housing options.

Short-term solutions

If you need a quick housing solution, such as a hostel or refuge, check out our pages on emergency accommodation. The Housing Executive has a legal duty to give housing advice and information on preventing homelessness to anyone who asks in Northern Ireland.

Renting privately or buying

If you want to rent privately, check out this step-by-step chart, which can help you find the right place. Remember, you'll usually need a deposit and rent in advance. Buying a place is also costly but you may be able to apply with co-ownership.

Renting from the Housing Executive and other cheaper options

Renting from the Housing Executive or a housing association can be cheap, but in many areas it's hard to get a place.

Supported housing

If you'd like to live somewhere where you can get help and advice, you could try a foyer for young people.
