Student housing

Where will I live?

Most students opt for university accommodation during first year and in later years, rent privately from landlords or letting agencies. If you decide to rent privately, use this checklist to help you find the best place. Don't be tempted to take on a place you haven't seen first.

How will I pay for it?

You'll usually need a deposit and rent in advance to give your landlord. Most students cannot get housing benefit to help with rent but there are a few exceptions. If money is really tight, your university may operate a hardship grant or loan scheme.

What are my rights?

Make sure you know your rights if you're renting privately. This will help you if you are having problems getting your deposit back or getting the landlord to do repairs. Your rights depend on whether you're a full tenant or a licensee.

I'm a student leaving care

If you're a student leaving care you'll need to find out about the different funding options open to you, including grants and the possibility of support from social services. The Housing Executive has a legal duty to give housing advice and information on preventing homelessness to anyone who asks in Northern Ireland.
