Ending a tenancy Print E-mail

If you want to move out of your rented accommodation, it's important that you go through the correct process. Whatever you do, don't just walk away!

You'll have to

  • tell your landlord
  • pay any outstanding bills
  • make sure there's no damage to the property

You can get more advice about how to end a private tenancy properly on our renting subsite

If you're a Housing Executive or housing association tenant you can end your tenancy by giving your housing provider 28 days' Notice to Quit.  Always seek advice before ending your tenancy.  You could end up with nowhere to go and the Housing Executive may find you 'intentionally homeless' because you left your home when you didn't need to. This will make it much more difficult to get an offer of social housing.
