House in Multiple Occupation Grant Print E-mail

A House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) grant aims to bring HMOs up to the HMO fitness standards. You can get up to £25,000 although this can be reduced.

Landlords and owner occupiers in certain areas can apply for a HMO grant.

Under current grants prioritisation scheme, new applications for HMO grants are unlikely to be approved, unless you can demonstrate exceptional circumstances. Applications for HMO grants, where the work has started, will be unaffected.

What work is included?

The Housing in Multiple Occupation grant is aimed at bringing a HMO up to the HMO fitness standards . Work included in a HMO grant may include:

  • providing adequate facilities for storing, preparing and cooking food
  • providing an adequate number of toilets, baths, showers and sinks
  • providing adequate fire escapes
  • providing fire prevention measures.

What properties are eligible?

You can only apply for a HMO grant if the property:

  • is registered with the Housing Executive's HMO Registration Scheme
  • is in one of the designated HMO action areas
  • is able to house 10 or more people
  • is in one of the targeted Town Centre Living Area.

You will only get a grant to convert a property into a HMO if it is in a Town Centre Living Area.

Who can apply for a HMO grant?

You can apply for a HMO grant if you own the property. You won't get a HMO grant if you are planning on renting the property to a member of your family within five years of completing the work.

How is the grant paid?

The Housing Executive will pay the grant when the work is completed to its satisfaction and you have sent:

  • accounts
  • receipts
  • certificates.

You may be able to apply for an interim payment once you have completed 25% of the work. However, this is at the discretion of the Grants Manager.
