Repairs grant Print E-mail

A repairs grant is available to help cover the cost of carrying out repairs required after you local council has issued a Certificate of Disrepair or a Public Health notice.

Only landlords or some private tenants can apply for a repairs grant. You can get up to £7,500 depending on the type of work needed.

Under current grants prioritisation scheme, new applications for repairs grants will be accepted and the scheme will continue to  operate normally.

What work is included?

Repairs grants are aimed at helping you repair or replace existing items in your home, for example:

  • eradicate damp
  • repair a basic amenity like an inside toilet.

You can't get a repairs grant to provide a new amenity. For example, a repairs grant wouldn't be available if you wanted to install a new inside toilet.

What properties are eligible?

You can only apply for a repairs grant if the Environmental Health Department of you local council has issued:

  • a public health notice
  • a certificate of disrepair.

You can start work immediately and ask for a grant later if your council has issued you with a public health notice.

Public health notice

Your local council can serve a public health notice on a landlord, an agent or a tenant. The council will usually expect the work to be carried out in a short time.

You can start the work immediately and then ask the Housing Executive for a grant.

Certificate of disrepair

Your local council can serve a certificate of disrepair on a landlord, an agent and some private tenants.

You must wait until the Housing Executive give you formal written permission before starting work.

Who can apply for a repairs grant

Landlords and tenants can apply for a repairs grant. You can only apply if the environmental health department of your local council has issued either a public health notice or a certificate of disrepair.

Owner occupiers are not able to apply for a repairs grant.

How much is available?

You can get a maximum grant of £7,500. The amount of grant available doesn't depend on your income but:

  • the type of work needed
  • the Net Annual Valuation (NAV) of the property.

You can get the NAV of your property from the Land and Property Services website.

The amount you get is worked out using a percentage calculation based on your NAV.

How is the grant paid?

The Housing Executive will pay the grant when the work is completed to its satisfaction and you have sent:

  • accounts
  • receipts
  • certificates.
