You are more likely to get a grant if you live in certain areas that the Housing Executive has targeted as needing extra help. Your local Grants Office can tell you if you live in a targeted area.
There are four types of geographical area targeted for grant aid by the Housing Executive:
Rural priority areas
Rural priority areas include areas where:
- housing conditions are especially poor
- there are high levels of economic disadvantage.
Contact your local Grants Office to find out if you live in a rural priority area.

You are more likely to get the following grants if you live in a rural priority area:

Urban priority areas
Urban priority areas include:
- areas currently classified as 'Urban Renewal Areas'
- areas with a wider housing or regeneration strategy in place
- Housing Executive estates with estate strategies in place.
Your local Grants Office can give you more information on whether or not you live in an urban priority area.
Grants available in an urban priority area
You are more likely to get the following grants if you live in an urban priority area:
- a renovation grant
- a home repairs assistance grant.

Town Centre Living Initiative areas
Town Centre Living Initiative areas are found in towns and cities which have a strategy encouraging people to live in the centre of the town or city. Your local Grants Office can give you more information on whether or not you live in a Town Centre Living Initiative area.
You are more likely to get a renovation grant and a house in multiple occupation grant if you live in a Town Centre Living Initiative area.

House in Multiple Occupation Action area
House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) areas are found in areas with lots of HMOs. Most HMO action areas are found in student areas. You will only be able to apply for a HMO grant if the property is in a HMO Action area.
