Right to repair scheme Print E-mail

The Right to repair scheme ensures that housing repairs which could affect your health or safety are completed quickly. The repairs must cost less than £250 to qualify for the Right to repair scheme.

Contact your housing association or a local advice agency to find out if a repair qualifies for the Right to repair scheme.

What types of repairs are included?

The Right to repair scheme covers emergency and urgent repairs. For example:

  • gas leaks;
  • electrical fittings in contact with water;
  • bare electrical wiring;
  • overflowing sewage;
  • broken external doors;
  • burst pipes;
  • burst storage tanks;
  • electricity cuts;
  • no heating in severe weather;
  • problems with electrical fittings;
  • problems with electrical heating systems;
  • problems heating water;
  • ball valve faults;
  • leaking pipes;
  • problems with your flue;
  • blocked sewers or drains;
  • leaking doors or windows.

Contact your housing association for more information whether or not your problem qualifies for the Right to repair scheme.

What happens after I report the repair?

Your housing association will tell you:

  • the name of the contractor who will carry out the work;
  • when the work will be completed.

What happens if the work isn't completed on time?

You can ask the housing association to get another contractor to carry out repairs. The housing association will give you a new date when the work will be completed.

What if the work still isn't completed?

You may be entitled to compensation if the work isn't completed by the deadline. Contact your housing association for more information on the rate of compensation available.

When doesn't the Right to repair scheme apply?

The Right to repair scheme doesn't apply if:

  • it is a routine repair;
  • you have told the housing association that you don't want the repair carried out;
  • you haven't allowed the housing association to inspect your home;
  • you haven't allowed the contractor access to your home;
  • the delay isn't the housing association's fault. For example, if the delay is due to severe weather problems or an inability to obtain necessary parts.
