Barking dogs Print E-mail

It is against the law for a dog to bark all the time and annoy neighbours. You could be fined up to £5000 if you let your dog bark all the time.

My dog keeps barking

Dogs bark to communicate, so an occasional bark is normal. However if dogs are left alone they can get upset and start to bark.

Don't punish the dog for barking as this will usually only make the problem worse. The best way to solve the problem is to understand why the dog is barking, and then look at that issue.

Proper training makes for quiet, happy and confident dogs. Training is easier when the dog is younger, but you can still teach an older dog new tricks.

My neighbour's dog keeps barking

Talk to your neighbour about the problem first. your neighbours may not know that their dog barks when they are out of the house.

If negotiation doesn't work you may have to contact your local council for help. Your council may have an action plan for dealing with these complaints.
