You may need to get planning permission and permission from building control if you want to carry out improvements or extension work.

If you are planning to carry out building work make sure that you keep noise to a minimum.

Planning permission

You may need planning permission, even if you are only carrying out small alterations or an extension to your property. This section outlines how to work out whether or not you need to apply for planning permission. More arrow

Getting planning permission

You must apply for planning permission using one of the official forms. You can get an application form from your local Planning Office or the Planning Service site. You will be charged a fee. More arrow

Building control

Your local council may have to examine and assess building work that you carry out. Always check with your local council if you need to get Building Control approval before starting any work.  If the work you've carried out doesn't meet building standards you may have to demolish the property, remove the alterations or pay a fine.
