Reasons for evicting social tenants in Northern Ireland
Your landlord needs a reason to evict you. They can start the process to evict you if
- you owe a lot of rent
- you, or someone in your home, has caused antisocial behaviour
- you have damaged or neglected your property
- you didn't tell the truth on your housing application form.
Your landlord can evict you, but only if it moves you to another property if
- they are going to redevelop your home or neighbourhood
- your home is adapted for a person with a disability but there is no-one in your household who needs this type of housing.
Finding out you're being evicted
Your landlord will send you a notice seeking possession. This will explain why your landlord wants to evict you.
Landlords usually only evict if
- you owe a lot of rent and haven't been able to keep to a repayment plan
- there have been lots of complaints about your behaviour.
Your landlord has to take you to court to evict you. Contact our helpline if you get a notice seeking possession. We may be able to stop the hearing or go to the hearing with you.
The eviction process is different if you are an introductory tenant. You are an introductory tenant if you've been a social tenant for less than 1 year.
