Your social tenancy can end if

  • your landlord evicts you
  • your landlord decides you aren't living in the property and takes it back, or
  • you end your own tenancy

Get advice as soon as possible if you can't pay. The Land & Property Services have a strict procedure for recovering rates arrears. There are strict time limits. If you contact your local Land & Property Services office, you may be able to negotiate a payment plan.

Do not wait for your lender to contact you if you are having money problems. Let your lender know if you have missed a mortgage payment of if you think this might happen soon.

You should only give back the keys to your property if you're absolutely sure that there's no way you can keep your home. Make sure you speak to an adviser at our Mortgage Debt Advice Service before you take this drastic step.

Having a careful look at your financial situation is a good starting point for dealing with your debts.

You can be evicted if you owe a lot of rent. Your landlord has to take you to court to evict you. They should only take you to court if all other ways of getting you to pay what you owe fail. Contact our helpline if you are finding it hard to pay your rent. 

 

There are many stages your lender must go through before you have to leave your home. The legal process can take a long time. Get advice as soon as possible and keep talking to your lender. It is still possible to save your home.

You could lose your home if you don’t pay your rent. Your landlord, whether it’s the Housing Executive or a housing association will have to follow the proper procedure before this happens. Part of this procedure is to work with you to try to sort out the problem.

If you are a homeowner, you can only be evicted if the court makes an order telling you to leave. This section explains what happens once your lender has applied to the court to evict you.
